Ex-boyfriend, Or The Dog

It was the doggy eyes that did me in this time
when we reconnected for conversation
and I’m surprised
because I thought I knew better
because I know you

And the trick was to make you want it all
all over again
and keep myself from giving in
make you sorry and obsessed
But instead,
I was the one who wanted to hold your hand
for, like, longer than ever
and I was the one who was a mess
for, like, always and always

How do you do it
because it’s all blowing up in my face now,
which serves me right
because love is a losing game
when you fool with it like so

I want to touch you
but I have to stay away,
get off the merry-go-round
before you bite
much harder this time
and I catch something all over again
