At the dentist today

I'm in so much pain right now.
The scary thing is, I shouldn't be feeling a thing.
I've taken two Ibuprofen's
but it appears that the damn capsules have traveled the system like candy corn.

I had a wisdom tooth pulled out today.
What a wonderful thing.
I received stitches too.

Ah well.

You know, I always wondered why they're called such things.
The name is rather ironic.
They're useless little nuisances
and yet they've got a respectable name.

Go figure.

Who came up with that?

Anyway, look what I found on wikipedia.

Wisdom Teeth: They are generally thought to be called wisdom teeth because they appear so late—much later than the other teeth, at an age where people are arguably wiser than as a child. The Turkish language refers directly to the age at which wisdom teeth appear and calls it 20 yaş dişi (20th year tooth). In Arabic, its name is Ders-al-a'qel, literally meaning "The tooth of the mind." In Korean, its name is Sa-rang-nee (love teeth) referring to the young age and the pain of the first love. In Japanese, its name is Oyashirazu, literally meaning "unknown to the parents," from the idea that they erupt after a child has moved away.

Interesting. I like the Korean translation best.

Falling Down: Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson's venture into the world of music has been met with mixed reviews. People are saying she can't sing, while others are praising her courage and depth. I must side with those reviewers whose thoughts are positive. I like Ms. Johansson's approach.

Taking the road less traveled, she soars here with a track that is a lot different than expected. But not many people will get it.

With her new album, there are no songs dedicated to bumping your booty against a muscled up beau. She isn't frolicking in her bikini at a beach in Mexico in her first music video either. Scarlett is no Z100 fixture. Instead, she has put together a set that is mature, profound, unusual, and unique. Tom Waits should be so proud.

Her first single blends an indescribable sound with her soothingly earthy voice. It's clever stuff. She definitely surprises. I just can't get enough.

Here's the video. Pay attention. You'll see; her music isn't so bad. It's innovative, provocative, sidestepping, and rebellious -- so, open up to it.

PS: She eerily, and perhaps inadvertently, invokes a little bit of Ozzy here too don't you think?

Robyn: Live

On May 2, 2008, Robyn performed live at the Grand Ballroom in New York City. She was fierce. Check out these short clips I took with my digital camera. Watch her moves. She's so cool. The first video is a snippet of her song Who's That Girl. The second video is Crash and Burn Girl. Get her self-titled album in stores now! It's outrageous.

The Hot List: Cycle 1, Vol. 1

Every three months, I'll post a list of my favorite choices in music, movies, and literature.

Movie:
Sex and the City
It's movie magic. We all waited too long for this.

Book: The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz
The book is a force beyond anything I've ever read. It's a labyrinth filled with struggle, peace, love, and Dominican history. This Pulitzer Prize winning masterpiece centers on the life of a Dominican adolescent who is eager to woo the ladies but doesn't have the right stuff to win them over. He is a nerd by all accounts. Odd in every sense. However, he has the strongest relationship with perseverance you will ever see. This novel will stir every emotion you've ever felt. It will break your heart and make you wonder. Read it. Learn from it. Absorb it. You will be moved to pieces by it. Guaranteed.

CD: Robyn, by Robyn
A comeback album of the highest kind. It is, as one fine journalist pointed out, "pure pop perfection."

The First One.

So, here I am. It's finally happened. I start right here. I'm set and ready for the world to take notice. Will this go anywhere? Probably not. But at least I'm prepared to spill it all out. No more lazying around like a kitten in pillow heaven. It's time to write write write. Keeping it all inside, caged between the heart and lungs, won't get me very far.

I'm a hungry artist dying to release. So, read up and have a lot of fun.

This is my blog.
