DVD of the Week

Little Ashes.
Rated R.

Forbidden love is a heavy subject. It's an old one too. Shakespeare wrote about it. I write about it. The subject never tires. It lives and it breathes from generation to generation, sex to sex, and age to age. It reeks, it heals, it hurts, it comes and goes fast and slow. It's a messy thing.

Many years ago, the famous Spanish writer Federico García Lorca fell madly in love with surrealist painter extrodinaire Salvador Dalí. The two met in college and began a close-knit friendship that moved to admiration and finally adoration, but unfortunately the two never saw eye to eye. Federico was more aggressive. It was clear and obvious that he loved Salvador but Salvador moved with reservation. Was he gay? Was he bisexual? Was he curious? These questions plagued the two of them and as the story unfolds, we see what inspired the two to create magnificent pieces of art.

The arts became their life and love was a bona fide muse.

I've always known that heartbreak makes an artist. Some time ago, someone asked me: "what motivates you to write? what inspires you?" My answer? Pain. Love lost. Anguish. Simple sorrows that feel too big to handle but really aren't in the grand scheme of things. It is true. A person becomes quite boring when he is completely full and happy every second. He dies inside. We've got to struggle forever to be worth anything.

These men struggled. They fought, they loved, they tried so hard to create art. It's like watching magic move about. Who knows if the movie precisely parallels the lives of these two vibrant geniuses. What biopic is ever exact anyway? Still, it's a moving piece based on a very interesting story. I could go on about this film but I'm afraid of ruining anything for you. See it.

You'll be surprised to see how great an actor Robert Pattinson really is. He earns high praise. You forget about his Twilight role. He's moving as Salvador Dalí. Spanish hottie Javier Beltrán is heartbreaking as Federico García Lorca. Live and learn, people.

If you've ever loved -- from deep within the guts of you -- you'll like this film. If you're the anti-lover, you'll still find something interesting here as well. There's a great deal of political happenings going on throughout the film, political dealings which becomes a huge part of Federico's untimely demise. People perish for the most amazing causes, even when it isn't wholly on purpose.

DVD of the Week

Grey Gardens.
NR.

In honor of this weekend's SAG awards and last weekends Golden Globes, check out one of Hollywood's finest actresses, Ms. Drew Barrymore in a career defining, award winning role. She took home the Best Actress in a Miniseries award and for good reason. You forget it's her as soon as she appears. She is that brilliant.

The Emmy award winning movie brings to light the life of Big Edie Beale and her daughter, Little Edie Beale both relatives of former First Lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis. Based on the documentary of the same name, we're introduced to the isolated, eccentric, and rather lazy ladies who live in a disheveled East Hampton mansion. You can't help but feel for these ladies who relay their story with comedy and grace, even though they are the oddest pair of women I've ever seen.

The film is a knockout because the performances are so extraordinary. If you're a lover of art, you'll love this movie. Study the actresses. Watch their mannerisms. Pay attention to the words. It's a beautiful movie all around.

Although these women were extremely quirky, they had a great deal of poignant things to say. It just goes to prove that there's a lesson to be learned from every single living thing. The most simplest to the oddest of human beings have something to say. There's a voice in everyone. We just need to sit and listen sometimes, you know?

For more information about the film, click here.

(out of 5) - a film in documentary form and flashback that provides us with a glimpse of the appalling lifestyle of two very bizarre and special ladies. It's heartbreaking and entertaining. Also starring the Emmy and Oscar winning film legend Jessica Lange. [Click for trailer.]

Fashion Police!

Beware of new clothes? Yes. Strange but true.

I have to be honest, I never thought of washing a new pair of jeans or a shirt before wearing them. Do you wash before wearing a new outfit? After reading this article, you'll want to wash new items three times before putting them on.

Click here for information on a study conducted by the folks at Good Morning America. A microbiologist found remnants of bacteria, feces, and vaginal secretions (wtf!) on new clothes in shops all over New York City. From high end to low end, excessive amounts of disease causing germs and bacteria were found.

So, before you wear those new pants and before wearing new underwear, get them to the laundry posthaste. Or else.

Now that 2009 is dead and gone, 2010 is sure to bring a lot of great things. I'm hoping that's the case anyway.

DVD of the Week

Descent.
Rated NC-17.

Let's begin with something controversial and so out there, you won't believe your eyes.

In a rather shocking and unbelievable film, Rosario Dawson plays Maya, an intelligent and attractive college student who tries to regain control of her life after being brutally raped by a fellow student. Poor Maya is so distraught and affected by her rape that she succumbs to addiction and intense depression. She leads a zombie-like life and eventually decides to figure out a way to exact revenge on her attacker. Now, how do you seek revenge against someone who has done you wrong? Why, you befriend a sexy, bisexual psychopath named Adrian and get him to help, of course.

Prepare for a bunch of graphic scenes. From Maya's rape to the last half hour, you will be speechless. You'll cringe and you'll be shocked.

Be sure to catch the NC-17 version.

(out of 5) - a well acted morality type film that provokes conversation and sympathy. It'll strike a nerve for sure. Viewer discretion is advised. [click for trailer.]

Obamanation.

Sometime in late January or early February, our President will give his State of the Union Address. In it, we’ll hear about deficits and healthcare reform, job creation, and quite possibly the war on terror. But will he speak about gay rights?

It is painfully doubtful.

In the last year or so, we’ve seen gay rights mauled by the passage of Proposition 8 in California as well as in similar rulings in other states. For gays, the right to marry has been stalled. It seems the whole nation is conflicted with the word “marriage." Too many believe that marriage should only occur between a man and a woman. And then there are those who feel the sex of the two individuals should not matter at all.

Now, I do not know the exact specifics of each law or bill that has gone against the possibility of homosexual marriages but what I do know is this: we, the gay community, have been given limited rights as a people. We are, dare I say, the new black. Slaves to the great land of the U.S. That is to say, we are forced to work hard for food, water, and shelter. To follow every rule, live respectful and law-abiding lives, and to pay our taxes like every other “normal” dutiful citizen. All this while receiving very little representation and equality. We are forced to endure constant judging and ridicule. Lynched by words that cut deep inside our very core. Dehumanized, rejected, infected, blatantly ignored. Obama, my friend, you beautiful black and powerful man, what has happened to equality?

Don’t get me wrong -- I’m not here to bash the President. Why do that if I know exactly how it feels to be attacked, you know? I can’t lie; the man has given our citizens hope. He has strengthened America to a point. He has given Americans pride, boosted morale, and reinforced faith in a land that was pretty much grey during Bush’s final years. I’m just here to challenge him.

I don’t expect him to come out and say, “Hey, leave the gays alone!” I mean, it would be totally awesome if he did but I don’t have that much faith in him. All I ask for is this – acknowledge us. Tell us we are going to be okay. Tell us to stay strong, that we matter. We count. If not marriage, that we will get an equivalant and have equal protection and rights under the law in every state and US territory. Tell us that you’re on our side. I want to hear it. Tell us something! We need you, like all the other groups you're helping. Like the poor, the jobless, the uninsured, and the homeless we are waiting. Look into that camera and let me feel your love too, Mr. President. I'm so tired of this and I really need you.

the Reel Club*

There are book clubs and knitting circles, but no movie groups, right? I’ve never heard of any. So, today, I propose my own. Will you join me?

If you’ve got a Netflix or Blockbuster account, let’s do this! Each week, I’ll post a “DVD of the Week.” I’ll include a brief synopsis (without giving any valuable information away) and a review. Your job will be to watch the film and tell me what you think.

Sound good? We’ll see how this goes.

If you don’t want to follow, that’s OK. You don’t have to watch the film on the given week. Perhaps you’ll use my recommendations for a later time instead? That’ll work too.

What will be my first choice? Come back Sunday to find out!

*: Pardon the cheesy title, but I kind of like it!

Motives & Thoughts, II

This made me cry
I'm sipping hot cocoa
It's chilly out
It's rather late
but I can't sleep.

I've been re-reading this all night. Say it out loud.

"When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, 'I used everything you gave me.'"
Erma Bombeck

I hope this is the case for me.
We'll see.

the Monster

i made a mistake
and if i get it
i guess i deserve it

it'll eat me
and i suppose that's what should happen
when you allow yourself to fall asleep...
to turn a blind eye - as they say
and fantasize
about a love that shouldn't be

prepare for another broken heart!

why?
because i forgot
i lost myself
and let him in
didn't care about myself at all

now, when they draw blood
i'll sit
and wonder
and ask
and cry
and pray
but it may all be too late

F.U.N.J.

Yes, another state says no.

How upsetting. But of course, who's really surprised? If New York won't allow marriage between couples of the same sex, then of course why on Earth would NJ allow it, right?

What a mess.

I don't think I'll ever marry - but not only because I can't. To be honest, I don't see myself attached to anyone for forever. But still. This issue matters to me because there are tons of people out there voting against what I should be allowed to do if I wanted to. I mean, there's no harm in marriage, right? No one dies from it, really. The act doesn't mean I'll have to sacrifice a bloody straighty. (Although, quite frankly, it should.)

Why can't those who want to marry get to?

Homosexuality taints the sanctity of marriage? No way! The straights have tainted it for many, many years now.

"It's only love. What's everyone so afraid of?" (Get Real.)

Motives & Thoughts, I

"Puerto Rico. My heart's devotion. [Don't] let it sink back in the ocean. [So what if] the hurricanes [are sometimes] blowing, [and] the population [is] growing, and the money owing, and the sunlight streaming, and the natives steaming. I [don't] like the island Manhattan! Smoke on your pipe and put that in!"

My version of the classic song "America" from West Side Story.
